Speaker’s Meeting 7:30 P.M.

Our guests were Kathy Gotch, Assistant City Manager of Chino Hills, and Jana Dale, Director of McCoy Equestrian Center.

Kathy spoke about the proposed equestrian overlay zone that the city has been working on. The equestrian overlay would create laws for horsekeeping in Chino Hills including guidelines on density, sanitation, dust control, noise, signage, etc. She updated us on the situation where the overlay is stalled at the county level, due to environmental questions with horses in other cities.

Kathy informed the club that there are several municipalities in Southern California facing scrutiny about groundwater runoff and similar conditions, and that we should have realistic expectations about the outcome.

She outlined some of the seemingly unenforceable directions from state and federal agencies regarding environmental issues, and counseled patience as cities learn to make their way through convoluted and complex regulatory considerations.

Jana spoke about the legacy of Helen and Frank McCoy in giving both their ranch and funds (via the McCoy Trust) to create our beautiful community equestrian park.

She updated us that McCoy’s will be finishing a third arena, building a new storage building, and adding permanent restrooms for outside events. Jana spoke about community use of the facilities and encouraged members to use and enjoy the McCoy amenities.

Many thanks to both Kathy and Jana for taking time to speak to our club. We appreciate the efforts of both of them in keeping the neigh in our neigh-borhood!

Meeting Minutes – June 24, 2009 (First Exploratory Meeting)

At 7 pm. Approximately 25 people, interested in the Chino Hills horse community, met at the McCoy Equestrian Center to discuss forming a horse club. Interested parties included boarders, trainers, and property owners in the area; show riders, trail riders, breeders, and parents were represented as well.

Suzi Vlietstra led the meeting with a presentation (click here to view) on possible needs and opportunities for a horse club in Chino Hills. After the introductory program, the group discussed ideas for projects for the club. In addition to those in the Powerpoint presentation, other ideas included, in no particular order:

  • Evacuation plan
  • Boat parade entry
  • National Night Out meeting
  • Day at the Races/Breeder’s Cup at Santa Anita
  • Tour of Chino Hills Equine Hospital
  • Anonymous horse census of Chino Hills
  • Horse trailer rodeo
  • Ranch Hand Olympics
  • Horse Rescue/911
  • School outreach
  • Networking
  • Moonlight Ride
  • Horse Rescue Awareness
  • Vet Clinics
  • Planned rides/poker rides
  • Therapeutic riding
  • Microchip clinic
  • Postcards for club awareness
  • City TV
  • Facebook page
  • Horse photo shoot

After the discussion of possible club activities, a positive show of hands indicated enough interest in forming a Chino Hills Horsemen’s Association that the meeting proceeded with that goal in mind.

A short break was taken, then those in attendance further discussed the concept of the club as outlined in the presentation. While no officers were elected, several committee chairman positions were filled by volunteers:

  • Trails & Rails—Troy Young
  • Quarterly Activities—Sara Record
  • Meetings—Alisa Wilson
  • Equestrian Community—not yet filled
  • Marketing—Mike and Suzi Vlietstra

Sarah Lockman also volunteered to create a Facebook page for the club.

Hot August Nights clinic concept was discussed. David Wilson volunteered to be the first featured speaker. Several people expressed concern about trying to pull off a large event so quickly; we agreed to discuss/explore and possibly save the concept for 2010.

Kristy Miller suggested distributing club info at the upcoming McCoy hunter/jumper show.

Christmas party was discussed—Suzi said she would check availability of McCoy facility.

Those in attendance agreed to hold the next meeting on Tuesday, July 14. Agenda to be posted on the club’s website when set. Second Tuesday will be the monthly meeting time until further notice.

Meeting ended at approximately 9 pm.
